I have always been a fan of keeping the 'feel' of an era when working that time period, Red Sleeve did it beautifully and then some. A bit more over and it would have been as revolting as 'The Concubine' was in terms of drama (evidence suggests he might have punished everyone around her to submit her to compliance). But that's why The Red sleeve, even with all its cliches and inconsistencies, worked. But a romance between a man who has complete authority over a woman, who eventually gets literally delivered to his bed neatly tied in a bow is not my idea of an ideal romance. For example,the humor was quite on spot, though eventually it does not stay with you. It's raw and visceral in many ways, even though there was a concious attempt to make it palatable to the TV audience. In reality we can still see the after effects of existential crisis that most eastern societies suffered from for centuries on end at the hands of the conservative mores of the society in general and S.Korea in particular. Yet it stays true to how it probably was. The Red Sleeve was such a painful watch throughout. Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec?
